Debate of the Month

Debate Of The Month

Not everyone is good at Debating. However, everyone has an opinion right? Well, each month I will pose a new question here on this page and you will be able to discuss it for an entire month! Then on the final Thursday of each month, we will meet on B.Net for about 30 minutes and discuss it live in the channel Clan SC:M. It should be a lot of fun.

This Week's Question:

Do Celebrities in the StarCraft community receive too much attention?

Thought Provoking:
This debate should be quite fun to participate in. Ever since the original Starcraft Beta, players who have stuck out in one way or another entered the forefront of discussion in the community. Players such as Agent911, Dudey and CannonBalls ruled the world, and gave players a "role model" to look up to. You also cannot forget players such as ZealotOnTheStick, and Zileas who created webpages filled with documentation and opinions that made things really interesting to read.

However, when is enough, enough? The StarCraft Community ever since the age of time has treated these players with quite large amounts of respect. During the original beta, Blizzard trusted their opinions and for the most part, neglected the common-folks opinion except for technical errors. You saw websites who covered the first great game that Agent911 played, or the game in which Cannonballs successfully 4 pooled on Island Hop. Now to this day, we post news about players who are deemed great by the community beating 7 computers and receiving news posts on all of the major Starcraft sites.

Have we gone overboard in the StarCraft community? Have we given the celebrities of our community, positions of high esteem where none of the commonfolk can get to? Have we as a community neglected other great pieces of work, just because they weren't written by a player who was deemed celebrity material?

I look forward to the responses to this since I think it'll bring out some good in us all, and also some bad, because truly this is a two sided issue.

Debate of the Month 5

LAST MONTH'S DEBATE:

When is the proper time to upgrade in a game of Starcraft?-
Closed

The debate produced a very interesting strategy discussion about the value of Upgrades and ultimately covered some very important material that all should know. Try reading it. It's quite an interesting thread.

PREVIOUS DEBATES:

Is the Starcraft Community one of the best gaming communities that exists?-Closed

Last month's debate started off with a nice start, and then it just sort of died unfortunately. The Starcraft Community is a community that I feel isn't the best gaming community by far. The players of the game whine about every little detail, they criticize Blizzard about their patches even though they actually spent the time to work on a game that isn't exactly modern. The main comparison was made between the Subspace and Starcraft Communities. Quite interesting read.

Do Newbies recieve too harsh of a treatment on Battle.Net?-Archived/Closed

Last month's debate was somewhat popular with 83 posts. The reaction from several people was quite interesting. Let us begin with NobleHelium's opinion. There were mixed views as I expected that there would be. Some people felt that Newbies definitely deserved to get bashed because everyone does stupid things and gets yelled at about doing them. While others believe that some newbies are definitely being mistreated, understanding the newbies point of view. They go into a game where they are forced to play against veteran players and the veterans have fun feasting on fresh blood. The third view that was covered is that arrogant newbies deserve to get toasted. Amen! Vote in the poll and in a couple of weeks we'll have the difinitive answer.

When is the proper time to expand in a game of Starcraft?- Archived/Closed
Several options were placed apon this debate. The key thing to take out of this is simple, you can read about the different views of a "naked" or undefended expansion, and a little interesting thought that I recieved about the rule of expanding after the large scaled attack. It was an interesting, although MUCH shorter debate. Enjoy the reading.
