The types of maps are broken down into multiple categories as follows:
- Default Standard: These are any maps that are primarily designed to be used with StarCraft's standard gameplay on any of the default modes like Melee, FFA, Top vs. Bottom, Greed, Team Melee, Etc. These maps may even feature certain gameplay enhancements in the UMS mode, such as Team-Play for instance, but only if playing on UMS is a secondary feature and Team-Play is not required for balance and/or proper start locations. Not using UMS on these maps will not cause any gameplay / balance issues.
- UMS Observer: These maps use StarCraft’s default gameplay, but are primarily or only designed for play with UMS due to observer slots.
- UMS Team Play: These maps use StarCraft’s default gameplay, but are primarily or only designed for play with UMS due to team-shared elements, designed for allied gameplay. Not using UMS could result in start locations that affect gameplay and/or balance, and is not recommended.
- All Standard: Displays all maps which use StarCraft's default gameplay (Default Standard, UMS Observer, UMS Team Play.)
- UMS Modified: These are any maps that modify StarCraft’s standard gameplay in any way, and are primarily designed to be played with UMS, or are unplayable in the other default modes. This would include maps like StarCraft Fortress, certain kinds of RPGs, and other miscellaneous UMS maps.
- UMS Campaign: Finally, these are the big epic maps, primarily designed to be played with UMS, or are unplayable in the other default modes. Most would probably be single player, but multiplayer campaigns and RPGs would be included. These maps may use either standard or modified versions of StarCraft’s gameplay.
